I'm K.O.

Hello everyone! I'ts been long since I've posted here!
I'm kind of feeling crushed for personal reasons, but I guess this is sadly good fuel for my creativity. At this point, you will have noticed that my work is hevily propelled by my mood, which sounds sickly pretentious btw...orz

As always, I'm going to update all of you with my current projects:

The Girl in Red: Well, the GUI art is still on concept because me being damn slow with everything lately. Yet I think I like a lot what I'm planning here. Probably my GUI's feel pretty old fashioned because it tends to have a lot of kitschy elements everywhere, but I'm trying to have a balance here.

It's quite sketchy but...What do you guys think?

The Hurtful Wall: Can you see the little poll on the right? I'm amazed of how many people have voted for THW to be finished. I promised everyone who was waiting for it that I will get it done.
I'm leaving this greatly spoilerish sprite of Lois. It's my favorite btw.
This is how Lois looks when she got an sprite...And why should she have an sprite when you play as her?
Any guess? (At this point, I don't even know if I'm making any sense with this crappy english of mine)

TKOT: Everyone got their prizes yay! I just need to draw the remaining ones that I offered everyone!

I think thats...All haha.

Yooo

So I thought It would be nice to vary a little from TKOT haha. I'm still unsure of the title of the game btw, I was thinking something like "A Dandy meal" or "The fancy meal" dunno actually-For now let's call it the first one.
Until I finish all I need to do with my other vn fellows, this project will be just script and concept art.

Again, this is Ange the protagonist of the story. He is the type of guy that can be found on the most quiet place on a party. Comes from a wealthy family composed by his father and his older brother Bryce. His mother left the house
when both him and his brother were very young because of the dominant personality of her husband. Still, she comes by from time to time to check how  her sons are doing.
Relationship between Ange and Bryce is a borderline between friendly aproaches and edgy insinuations. The fact that Ange is jelaous of his brother is no secret inside the house, and he is not even afraid to scrub that into Bryce`s face. Probably the biggest reason why he acts like that is because he has a giant crush on Bryce's fiance; Isa.

Ange`s hobbies are: Reading, painting(But he paints horrible..) and recolecting samples for his botanical journals.

I'm still not sure about his clothes....I always have a hard time designing men outfits because I do want them to look manly yet I don't want it to be boring-
He wears a kind of weird poncho, and the regional pattern of his place are geometric shapes, more like triangles and squares.
Dunno about the color pallette haha, it's quite similar to the one I used for the Priestess of Annük.

"A Dandy meal" takes place in an isolated town surrounded by mountains named Granado. We get a glimpse of how this are after a big reform to the religious that follows the principal divinity of Annük, which had become openly obsesed with eating human flesh. The mayor of Granado along with the police prohibited any religious activity that praises Annük in town, and sent everyone who oposed to old downtown, where also homeless and the poor used to live. Meanwhile the autorities fill their pockets with noble's gold and play oblivious about the poor who are now the feast of Annük followers, there is a rummor that the abbandoned Blue Church is open for anyone who still want to pray for Annük.
You play as Ange, a young wealthy man, who is involved in a family predicament. His older brother, Bryce,  is nowhere found in his engagement party. The desesperate search that Ange and his father perform on their own house ends with a disgusting discovery; Bryce still follows Annük, and he had eaten human flesh as a proof of his loyalty. Being Bryce the light of his eyes(Also their last resort of their success to being looked as nobles) Ange's father comands his son to search for his older brother and bring him back no matter at what cost...

To finish all my blabla, here are some info of the three heroines:

Priestess Arianne: Posibly the most sane looking of the trio. She shares the words of Annük with devoted passion and love. She possess a greatly amount of charisma within the people of their surroundings, which whiteknight her in any disadvantaged situation. Ange always finds hard to talk to her, specially when he wants to find a flaw into her arguments, because she will raid him with morals.

Priestess Rayne: They say Priestess Rayne was more suited to join the police than the Blue Church. She got an awfull temper and violent ways to make you agree with her. Hopefully she got a limit when her blood pressure rises- A long deep scar goes from her upper part of her forehead and ends into her left eyebrow, and there are several leyends about the origin of it. No one knows which one is true, but it amuses Ange to hear them.

Priestess Leonor: A tall weird looking woman with a heavy layer of makeup on her face. She remains quiet, expressionless and still, as Rayne calls her "Priestess Mummy". Her reasons on the Blue Church are unknown. Even so she carries her role inside it very well. She despise eating human meat, and she is always on the verge of throwing up and swallowing. From time to time, Ange can't help to laugh at her because of her clumsy look.

ps_sorry if my english fails me again...

Anouncing Winners!

The time has come!

Fanart Category Judge: Clua

-First Place- Carassaurat!
Carassaurat takes Os, Corvus and Vosges to the sick world of noir gangsters! I actually prefer colored ilustrations but the strong shadows and soft gray highlights got me here. The interpretation of the characters  in this universe is totally fun, even if they are set on a serious looking mood. I love the fact also it's presented like a mockup screen of an actual game(I was very tempted to draw everyone on this style!)
Carassaurat displays his skills to take TKOT characters to another level making them look more realistic, more human(You see, they have nose!) Yet, because of the nature of the original designs, they  look  bizarre! Out of place! I think this is why this entry is my favorite.

-Second Place-Okumis!
This entry....IS TOO CUTE! It's actually the first one I recived and gave me hope to continue the contest :_:
Okumis drew an adorable entry, where Os is a thief and Gervase is the law here, a policedogman(Dear blog follower, I hope by this time, found Corvus there)
The pallete choose is vibrant and the flats and gradients are placed correctly, so it gave an ilusion of volume. I've actually had a hard time with this entry and the third place winner. I think both have their strong points and weakness. I choose this one as second because Gervase. Even if Os looks a little bit OCC there for me, Gervase is perfectly characterized for being in another dimension.

-Third Place-Merula O!
Merula O drew almost all characters from the game and placed them into a gang. A japanese school gang!
They have interesting clothes! I love particularly the ones choose for Os. She really looks badass there!
My main problem with this entry is how characters are portrayed. I can understand Os being bossy, but
the remaining characters are not expressive enough for me to catch their personalities. Even so, I believe this entry is great because of the amount of work and love put into it.That's why I choose it for the third place.

Fanfic Category Judge: Anarchy

-First Place- Niz!

This entry consists of some strong scenes and characterization choices. The author adheres to canon characterization for the most part, but also extrapolates and builds upon them, adding fun little details, moments, and interactions like Gervase bringing Os a towel, or Vosges snarking at Os's unexpected contributions to the student council, as well as reinterpreting them to great effect, like Lilja still being preoccupied with death but advocating against it, which seemingly helps to trigger Os's decision to start changing.

The structure of this fic is... interesting. We move through four perspectives - Lilja, Gervase, Vosges, and Os, and it progresses chronologically as well, which means that with each shift we're getting more and more information about Os from different perspectives, including information about that character's relationship with Os as well as their thoughts on her issues... but is the story actually progressing? It seems like the classic conflict - climax - resolution structure has been heavily skewed. We start off the story with the exposition, jump straight to the Lilja section with Os being all introspective and questioning herself (and possibly considering death) and then making up her mind to change ("hardening into some sort of resolve"). The rest of the fic is focused on the aftermath of that - Gervase, Vosges, and Os's sections are like a very extended resolution section where Os goes through the steps of starting to change - dismissing Gervase, doing student council work, letting Vosges go, and so on.

Most significantly... there's not much conflict in this entry, making it feel like less of a story and more of a vignette. Os comes to her decision fairly early in the piece, and the rest of it is just carrying it out without anything hindering her, so what we have here is a description of Os starting to change, instead of the story of how she came to that resolution. There's no real conflict or struggle, per se. Reading this is a more sedate affair where the author trickles little details down to you and you meander around the various perspectives to pick them up and put them together to form a complete picture. But even then, because Os's struggle is so under the surface, you don't really feel a sense of accomplishment or climax when you reach the end when we reach Os's perspective and the conclusion she reached earlier on finally becomes explicit - she's going to change. We haven't been following her struggles, we've been following her resolution of those struggles.

I like how for the most part, the story gives you details and expects you to get what's going on without spoon-feeding you exactly what Os is thinking, thanks to the constantly changing perspective, but a side-effect of that is that when you hit the ending, it seems rushed, almost like an afterthought or an answer sheet that infodumps a summary of what this story and Os's emotional arc was all about.

I also enjoyed that this fic was a twist on the TKOT narrative, by having Os reflect and change withoutkilling herself, thanks to Lilja's words. It's a fitting bit of irony that he's the patron of suicidals in the original work. It's a scaled down version of TKOT's narrative, even more scaled down than TBOT, because this is dealing with a schools and the individuals within it, which gives Os more space to develop as a character without having to resort to something as extreme as suicide in order to trigger character development. Too bad we don't actually get to see much development, since the transition from cruel Queen to wanting to change is so... abbreviated.

-Second Place- Camille!

This entry has a very simple yet effective premise, and a relatively fresh one too, compared to the well-worn high school setting. What if you take the narrative of TKOT and transpose it onto the bread-making industry? It's manages to hit a similar tone to the original in terms of the balance between drama and light-heartedness, and adds a cute rivalry-type dynamic to Corvus's and Os's relationship. Despite being the most well-rounded, concise, and polished entry, however, it seemed too much like a step-by-step retread of the original TKOT's dramatic arc, or at least of Corvus's route. The characterization is faithful and well-executed, and it's interesting to see these character dynamics reinterpreted in this very different, realistic setting, but it didn't seem to bring much new to the plate, which is why I chose to put it in second place.

-Third Place- Jasmine_Joy!

The one factor that placed this ahead of Meli's entry was the fact that Jasmine_Joy actually attempted to write a story about the characters of TKOT. Despite Meli's entry being somewhat better written and more polished than Jasmine's, it reads as the author shoehorning the characters of TKOT into a pre-existing story with stock characters. Jasmine_Joy's entry, despite being rougher, had more heart to it, and the characters have personalities that actually echo their canon characterizations.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Congratulations to all the winners! I thought to give a little reward to everyone who participated and didn't win anyway. So I will contact you soon :D!!

Quick entry!

I'm sorry for the lack of updates! Have a quick entry of my current progress on the projects I'm involved!

All Basiliska art is completely done ;D! Wow It's been a while, I really hope you guys enjoy both the story and characters that Carrogath wrote and also my art hehe
I worked also on the GUI, it's my first time working completely on an interface for a game(That it's not mine of course!)

As you know, Kaleidofish is back, so I will be working on the remaining art for The Girl in Red.
All sprite art for TGIR is already done, so the GUI and the CG scenes needs to be done.
I did the logo, what do you think about it?

As always my own projects are on hiatus, there is a silly thing on my downloads tray if you haven't noticed :u(Was done in 3 days lol)
Hopefully I will be back doing AJ sprite art too :_:

Don't forget the knife of the traitor contest ends on May 29th!!

Neewwsss..!

Yes, this post again. Follow me meanwhile I eat this giant bowl of chocolate corn flakes and soy milk(YUCK)

About my games/projects:

+I wish I could, but I'm not entering nanoreno this year. Mostly because two reasons:
-I'm already full with other projects I'm helping + commisions + freelance work. I'm afraid doing nano will eliminate myself of the planet.
-Even if I might not enter, I already had an idea! And because I was impatient...I already started writting about it(see the following point of games/projects)

-I've been thinking for a long time about making a game about cannibals. Nano was the perfect excuse to make it reality! But as I said above, I might not enter this year...Anyway, I started a few weeks ago to write it.I don't want to make the same mistake as Eyes of Wilderness...To start writting and doing art in pararel, For me that's a great mistake...I would rather finish writting all of it and then doing the art-

So Le filet mignon was born(as my sister translated me, it means "the cute fillet" )
Have some concept art...This is all I will have until I finish the whole script. Wish me luck :D
What is about? Well, it's something very light...In the same lightness of TKOT(but this would not be comedy!) Might not spoil anything yet...All I can say that the heroines are all cannibals. But our protag can't be eaten that easily(You see him blue? Well, that's for a reason)

Ange, your protag-chan. (20 years old)
Ange and his brother Bryce(24)

Priestess Arianne (20) Totally not Annaise lol.
 Priestess Leonor(23)

Priestess Rayne(21)

I'm staying late some days to write more about it. So I guess more than 10k for arround May is not impossible? lol. Oh yeah. This is a BxG game or whatever. You can go through 4 heroines routes(3 shown in the concept art, one secret)And you can have 3 ends with each of them(love?, friendly and well, yeah, eaten or even worse than eaten haha)

+I've been thinking to throw an Eyes of wilderness demo. Would you like that? It's still quite incomplete.Lacks of various cgs and some insert stories...

+Don't forget there is an ongoing contest for The Knife of the Traitor!

About projects I'm helping with!:

Basiliska: I'm on the CGs now! One is almost done yay! After all cg, GUI is what needs to be done.

American Jurassic: Yesssss sprite art on the way.(Will not say anything else)

Background tutorial? Part 1

MONTHS ago I was asked to make a tutorial about backgrounds...Personally I think I might be a good advisor on those but I can give some tips of what I really know about coloring.
(And...I'm going to give my best trying to explain the best I can, I'm sorry Miruki, this is for you!)

So...Where to start? I don't even know!

This is my method, do not take this as an absolute truth(Becase it isn't there will never be)
You can  catch whatever you find useful of this and use it .

What to do first?
Open your prefered program(I use Photoshop cs3) and input the size of your canvas(Be sure to
work on a bigger canvas than the final product, at least the double of size. For example if your canvas is going to be
1366 x 768, work it at least on 2732 x 1536, then when you finnish it, resize it to it's original size )

Now that we have or canvas, let's think about what are we going to do, and get a bunch of references ready(I usually
don't do this...orz But you totally should! )

For this example I'm going to paint a dusk landscape, something like this one
Examine which colors are the predominant on the picture, cold colors right?(blues, purples..etc) but also got warms(not as much as the colder ones)

Start with your canvas, and paint it with the predominant color of your bg(Why? We want to make sure this color affects the whole setting)
Now, let's sketch our background.(This is where you apply all your knowledge about drawing, perspective and proportions...I know this very vague so I won't corrupt your head with filthy lies)
I tend to do everything in one layer(You can work faster on that way buy it's hell if you want to edit haha, If I want to edit what I do is paint over everything...But probably that's the worst way to work a bg)But this time I'm using layers. See? Create one layer and start sketching. Use your favorite brush there...I use that one marked on the screencap to sketch because it's sharp.
Now that we have our sketch done(Think it's something worth to continue) What I do is..Color.
Other more polished artist(I suggest using this instead of my "me avoiding lineart") after sketching, they go for  a cleaner sketch or much better a lineart. Choose which one will favor your final result.
Before I start coloring I have pictured in my head which parts of the background are near and which ones are farther. The nearest ones will have a more sharp coloring and the elements which are farther will be more blurry. It helps a lot thinking of your bg as a layered picture(like the one bellow, 3 parts)
Also remember that farther elements will have a washed out color.(Specially on daylight)
Coloring will come in part two! I'm following this post with news!
